1st yr. coach, U-5 & U-9 Basketball teams. I know nothing about the sport, where can i get the basic info? We follow High School Rules

This is the first year that our organization is able to actually get a girls team going. I know some may think I am crazy since I know nothing about the sport and to top it off, I took on coaching two teams. It broke my heart when I heard no one wanted to coach the teams, so since my two girls are each on one of the teams, I said I would do it even though I know nothing about it. I will do as much research and reading that I possibly can, but I was curious to know if there is something our there that can teach me the Basic 101 on Basketball......

    Tiffany,
Here you go: Bounce ball, pass ball, throw ball into hoop. No, really, there are a multitude of basketball coaching resources available for all levels. Check out your local library, book store, or high school coach. Just one book on the basics should be enough to get you through your first season with kids this age. Also, can you recruit an experienced parent or two to help you out? Maybe your local middle school or high school has players willing to help and earn community service credit. Or check with your local Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts. Best advice: Keep it simple and keep it fun.

    1. Thanks a bunch... Luckily I've got the first three suggestions down, so I have a starting point.. LOL, I am the parent/coach that is not in it for any other reason, but to see the smiles on my kids faces. When I say my kids, I don't only mean my daughters, i call all the kids on my different teams "My Kids!" Every sport that I coach I have many rules; the first being respect and honesty for each and everyone who are part of the team, the second is that we are a team and although some may be better at certain things, we all have our strong points, so this means that no one child is more important to the team than another. I treat everyone equally. The third of many rules, is that they enjoy themselves and make sure they have fun with it. I believe that if they are taught to have fun, then the rest will come with time and also age.......

    Tiffany,
I think we all wish there were more coaches with your fundamental understanding of the purpose of youth sport. We need more like you out there. Best of luck to you!

Wow, there really isn't much to add to that. I agree 100%. My philosphy is 1. Have Fun 2. Don't get hurt. 3. Play better today than you did yesterday. 4. Win. I let my players know that winning is not the most important thing. As long as they take care of the first three # 4 will come. Great job Jack. Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving to you both.

I would do a google search on kids drills. I like to practice using three different rotating drills, use your parents, and rotate your kids to a new group every 15 minutes. This will keep your kids from standing around and getting bored. At this age building a good foundation is important, athletic stance, shuffle step, dribbling ,from a walk, with one hand then the other, having a job during the game ie. getting back on defense and finding your man. I share the same philosophy as the two prior comments, except for the winning part, they're all winners for trying something new. Most important, have fun, if you're not they're not, put on a happy face coach and have a blast!
