Should sand volleyball become an NCAA women's sport in 2010? What do you think?

As Hans Stolfus writes in "NCAA sand volleyball debate heating up" [http://www.avp.com/News/2009/11/Sand-Editorial.aspx], there's controversy and politics in the air over whether sand volleyball should become an official NCAA women's sport next year.

Opponents cite regional disparities in recruiting and infrastructure costs, and worry it would take away from the popularity of the hard court game. Proponents cite the USA's success at the Olympic level and better women's collegiate sports and scholarship opportunities.

For my part, I say the more volleyball of any type, the better. What do you think?

I agree. There will always be regional differences that make a sport more cost effective in one area than another. But if they allow for proper scheduling of a decidedly summer sport, just like baseball and softball, it can be a success anywhere. I don't think infrastructure costs are that big a deal. Compared to other outdoor sports that need up to 15000 sq yards just for a playing field, a sand court can be put together on about 800 sq yds and whatever grandstands fit around that area. Then comparing how many scholarships would fill a team against even basket ball with a five players on the court and maybe 12 total on a team, the cost of fielding the team itself has got to be one of the lowest of any team sport. And once the winter weather starts, any excitement leftover from the sand courts will just be passed on to the hardcourts.

Absolutely. Sand volleyball is an excellent woman's sport and the fact that this is being considered is a good thing. Hopefully, colleges will catch up with the 21st century where beach ball is a popular sport, and follow suit in offering it to their students.
