I'm a rec/school/club vball coach. I keep great stats. Any add'l recommendations on keeping parents in line? I just want to be current :-)

I have learned quickly to train the parents first, then kids. I really never had a problem before using this method. I just want to make sure I'm on top of things and do everything completely "PC" - ESPECIALLY CLUB! Any tips to keep me/them in line will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi April,
I received and accepted your request and am looking forward to reading more about your impressive volleyball experiences.
With very few exceptions, parents want to help their kids in everything that they do. But often they overstep their boundaries and do more harm than good to the athletic career of their children. If they don't know what those boundaries are then the problems will continue.
From my experiences as a Boy Scout leader I've learned that children as young as 10 should be taught and expected to handle their problems themselves, and that parents should not get involved other than to know what's going on. Otherwise the boys will expect their parents to handle all of their problems, and for how long? Amazingly the director of a local 4 year college said that he is still battling with parents who are trying to do all of the registration and class selection for their adult kids!
Of course it's the responsibility of the coach to teach kids how to approach them with their questions and/or problems and for the coach to be approachable.
Parents need to allow the kids to enjoy sport participation for themselves, and to understand that this activity is their kids, and not their own. If problems get out of hand, you may suggest the following resource by Drs. Dave Epperson and George Selleck: Beyond the Bleachers-The Art of Parenting Today's Athletes.
Also, what do you mean by "I keep great stats"?

    1. I keep records of the kids hits, errors, digs, etc. so I know where I need to help each child. A lot of times, parents would ask questions why do I keep concentrating on a skill with their child, so I have stats to back up my decisions. If a child can't pass or serve, why would I focus on setting? I love the book idea and thank you! I just want to stay as open minded and consistent as possible.

    2. April,
I keep playing stats also, but I don't depend on others to do it for me. I only keep rally ending stats though. I've found other's stats unreliable and inconsistent, which makes them relatively worthless.

    3. Can stats be added to the Weplay team page, I see you can add the score but can other stats be added?

Hi April, I recommend you have written expectations for both the players (age specific) and parents. By setting expectations of your coaching philosophy and season goals up front and communicating on what is expected of parents (and players), you will have a much smoother experience throughout!
