Should I hit or set in High School Volleyball?

I go to a private school, so I've played since 4th grade. Ever since, I've been a setter at school. Two years ago, however, I joined a club volleyball team, and they had me hit. I am pretty good at both, but am torn between the two. I am a more consistant setter, and I like it becase of that. When I hit, I don't always make it over because I am only 5'2'' but I love it more than setting. When I do make it over, it is extremely hard to return.

Which should I do?

Personally, I think setter is a more rewarding position. The setter is involved in more plays, and you're mastering a tougher skills.

If there is another player on the team in your same predicament, you could talk to your coach about running a 6-2, where you can set when you're in the back row and hit when you're in the front row. The team benefits because there are always 3 hitters.

    Hope that helps!

    Johnna,
Setters always get the most training because of their disproportional value to the team. Good hitters are a fairly common. Feel fortunate that you have the opportunity to do both. Without knowing your age or level of play your height doesn't tell me much, but should be a consideration also. 5'2 is a liability as a middle school or higher level for anyone playing at the net. Have you considered libero (defensive specialist)? Even at that position having been a setter would be great experience. My advice? Keep setting.

Johnna, a few things to consider. You have a few years yet to develop. Your skills are still improving, and you may still grow a few more inches. Height issues can be overcome with reaction time and a great jump. Your experience at setter will make you a good floor captain. Don't try to pidgin hole yourself into one position just yet. You love hitting, as do most who can do it well, but remember your hard to return hits are going against middle schoolers many of whom aren't planning to go much further. In high school you will have a higher concentration of better players you will be hitting against, and the blocking will be much better. Height and ability to get over the net won't be as much of a factor for a setter, especially in a 6-2 offense. All that being said, my niece went to high school intending to be one of their best ever liberos and ended up being one of their best ever hitters at 5'4". So try every opportunity to play the position available to you and work with your coach to develop all your skills, but be open to change, and willing to play where you do your team the most good. BTW I like setter because they get to control the court and play, and while they don't get the glory of the fantastic dig or awesome kill, they are usually most responsible for the win.
