That is great your son is trying out wrestling. I would suggest participating in a fun, local camp to help him learn the basics and see how enjoyable the sport can be. Also, unless he is already a very competitive kid, not too many matches and avoid some of the more advanced tourney. Well, I wish your son luck and hope he falls in love with the sport like I did. (I played basketball until I was a freshman in high school)

I am always happy to hear that more kids are joining this amazing sport of wrestling. I would advise to have a lot of fun and enjoy the sport for starters. There are many local organizations and school that hold open mat for beginners to help with the fundamentals which in turn helps boost his confidence.

Get him watching wrestling matches and technique videos. Here is one of the best resources for that that I know of http://WrestlingTrainingMedia.com/cav1

My son is 9 and is entering his 4th year of wrestling, I too suggest in participating in a fun enjoyable organization. Tournaments are great but if the child isn't having fun and enjoying himself, he won't want to continue. Good Luck!

I have six sons, all were wrestlers. my advice would be to have fun and not be discouraged if at first he doesn't win. if the dedication is there, the wins will come

i been wrestling four years, and my advice is to teach him to do about 3 things - get a take-down, pin, and get out of a pin. its always worked for me, and i wrestle the 135 - weight class.

I like what Kodi had to say. I would also like to add that a takedown set-up and an escape would help. TD set-ups give you the takedown much easier. If your opponent cannot take you down, nor hold you down, he has very few options left to score points against you. And don't forget, good conditioning and flexibility help to push the tempo. A tired wrestler gives up moves (and points) alot easier, so don't be THAT wrestler. Flexibility (stretching) prevents injury as well as minimizes some cheap shots and submission-style moves.
