Thanks for the suggestion, Chad. We want the same thing. But the formatting features we have on some other parts of the site have caused some trouble for some users, so for something as important as the messages feature, we wanted to make sure it works for everyone, every time, so we took a simple approach to it. We do have some ideas about how to bring back this feature without sacrificing speed and reliability, and I hope to be able to try those out soon.
