Soft toss from the side and tee hitting builds great strength and confidence for young and older hitters.

If the problem is timing and your bat speed is too slow to "catch up" to the pitch, then try resting the bat on your back shoulder, pointed more back than straight up, and hold your hands about belly high. When you swing, this should allow you to whip or slap the bat off of your shoulder in one motion out towards the ball instead of bringing your hand in, down and around, which takes more time.

Well Bobby is right. But also if the problem is lifting your head, try biting the collar of your shirt. Just in the middle of the shirt. When you get your confidence back, you can stop biting it. Also you can put a tire on a pole standing up and put it to your measurment and practice hittin off that.

Its hard to answer this question correctly without seeing the swing in question, but here are a few things I work with when teaching.

    1. if you have a long swing (hitting outside in, instead of inside out) you can put a ball on the tee and start by hitting the ball with the but of the bat then go up to a chain link fence with an old bat and put the but of the bat about three inches from your stomach and touch the cap of the bat on the fence. then take some full practice swings without touching the fence with the bat. This will also help with dropping your shoulder.

    2. if you are lifting or droping your head then you can do the bitting of the shirt.

    3. if you are lunging forward instead of staying back on the ball, start on a tee and do what i can the three step motion, but make sure at first you put a dramatic pause inbetween these steps. first, take your normal small foot step. second, rotate your hips without moving your bat (this will also help with the first drill). lastly, throw your hands through the ball instead of swing at the ball.

    4. take golf ball woffle balls and have someone throw them to you and hit them with a cut offf broom handle. this will help with your hand/eye coordination.

the biggest misconseption in hitting is everyone is taught at a very young age to swing at the ball, when actually you want throw your hands through the ball. Doing this will give you a fast swing resulting in a better batting average and more power.

    Hope this helps.
