Question
What is the best way for my son to learn to play goalie? He's not interested in being a forward.
He hasn't been part of a formal hockey team yet so I'm really interested in the best way to get him started.

Hey Jonathan,
I've coached for many years and it's my opinion that depending on your sons age he should get into a goalie camp.It sounds like he's passionate about playing goal but if he's young he must learn the basics of skating, balance etc before he moves full time into the net.
Good luck and keep your stick on the ice!

My son is 7 1/2 years old. He started in a hockey learn to skate clinic when he was 4, he skated 1 1/2 seasons at the mite clinic level, 1 season at the mite house level and 1 season at mite B. He's wanted to be in net since he was about 2 years old but we felt he needed to learn all the positions before we gave in.
He is a fantastic skater and many of his coaches have said he's too good of a skater to be a goalie but that's his passion. So last fall we finally gave in and got him used goalie equipment. He does really well in the position. He is a very visual learner so he watches NHL games all the time and emulates their motions / movements when he is on the ice.
A high school goalie spent many practices with him one-on-one and that was hugely beneficial. Since February he has been taking part in special hockey camps with and without specific goalie coaches.
Right now he is in a 3 on 3 spring camp on a mini ice rink playing goal for mite level and the next hour is squirt level. It's great practice for him being shot on almost continuously for 2 hours. It's also preparing him for the next level of play since this upcoming season will be his last season as a mite.
Off ice he constantly practices in the kitchen, garage and driveway being shot on by my DH, my DD (who also plays hockey), grandma or me. Sometimes on roller blades and other time in sneakers.
There are a lot of specialty goalie camps available in the spring and summer but I think he'd need to have prior experience before joining one of those. So my suggestion is to get him involved in a youth hockey program. Let him learn to skate and learn the basics of hockey... then he can evolve into a goalie.

I'm a goalie in hockey to! You should pratice. If you want to be a good goalie you have to have good reflexes. So throw a ball against a wall pretty hard, and tell him to catch it. J
