How Would I Start Up a Tournament Team In Thornton, CO?

My friends and I are 14 years old and we really want to start up a tournament team. We would have to play during the summer. My friend's dad would be our coach and we would have uniforms covered. I just want to know how much money it would cost and how to get it started.

I am from Arizona, but I would guess that starting up a team would be about the same procedures. One of the first things you would have to do is get with the ASA org. and have your team managers/coaches register your team and go through all of the background checks. The main Colorado ASA site is http://www.coloradoasa.org/. After you have done that you would want to build your team. If you do not have enough people in mind from other rec. teams that you have been on then there is normally a forum where you can post for try-outs. I found one located on http//www.coloradofastpitch.com/teaminfo.htm.

Most teams require each player to pay a start-up fee to cover their uniforms/batting helmets/bags/ and any other team gear and then monthly dues. A lot of teams around here charge approx. $50 dollars a month. If your carrying 10 to 11 girls that will pay for 1 and 1/2 tournaments a month (Most tournaments down here are around $350 or so. I would definitely talk to other teams/coaches in your area and find out how they charge dues. For us, there is no winter and ball is year round, so are dues and tournaments are based on a yearly schedule. Fall/winter is normally a lighter schedule so you are able to bank a few dollars by only playing one tournament a month. During the summer we may play 2 to 3 a month so your acutally spending more than you are taking in, so you are using your funds you banked in the winter. By the way you probably want to file for a 501c (non profit). Alot of teams also do up sponsorship letters and try to get local businesses to donate or do car washes. We did several car washes this year to help offset the cost for our trip to Colorado to play in the "Sparkler".

I hope this helps, let me know if you have anymore questions and I will try to answer them.
