Question
How can I improve my pirouettes?
My pirouettes have been okay before, but at least I had them! Since I have been back from intensive, I can no longer easily hold a pirouette (especially en pointe) and I used to be able to do doubles. Any advice?

1. Make sure that you pull up into a HIGH releve on your bottom leg (most people go up, but not high enough), the better you lock your foot in a high releve, the longer you can stay up.
2. Don't over-cross or under-cross your prep. No matter what kind of prep you're doing, it should be in a deep plea, and your ankles should be in line (a good forth position)
3. Make sure you close to passe as quick as possible, this will keep your momentum up, and closing your arms quickly will help with that, too.
4. Be sure to spot your head! if you don't know how to do this just follow these easy steps, and then try it in a pirouette
-begin turning to the right, SLOWLY
-watch yourself in the mirror
-once you cannot see yourself, whip your head around so that you
can5. DON'T LOOK DOWN! this will cause you to lose ALL your balance
6. make sure that your passe is connected to your leg (placement varies, but it's usually above the knee).
7. Make sure you know which kind of pirouette you're doing. as in, jazz or ballet? with jazz, the leg in passe is turned in; with ballet, it's usually turned out.
Hope this helps :)
