Question
Three 3-hour classes a week (right after school). She's only in first grade. I worry that this will be too much "work" for her and she won't enjoy it because it takes away her after school time with her friends in the neighborhood! Anyone else in the same boat?

first off good for your daughter!! she must b talented to get into level 4. this is a
tuffie but i think you should sign up for a few weeks of it and see if she likes it.
if she doesnt she can quit after the few weeks!! best of luck!! -
No one knows your child better than you. You already know if she is capable of three hours of additional activity. As for school work, gymnast typically have a higher GPA. A better question is "Is this what you want for your daughter?"
Gymnastics is a very rewarding and demanding sport. It is a huge time commitment as well as a financial one.
Is this for recreation or because you want her to compete? Either one is fine as long as it fits your daughter.
No one can make this decision for you. You can always try it out and see if it works, but will this opportunity be available to your daughter later?
I am not sure if this helped you at all but I hope it does.

I think yes it is too much. I am thirteen and i was invited to join team at 6 years old, but i didnt. Even at young ages the coaches are hard on you if you're on team. It is really time consuming and expensive to join team. you have to travel a lot and your child wont have time for her friends.

Every child is different. Make sure the team program won't burn out your daughter, she won't get penalized for those occasional family functions and sleepovers etc. that will result in her missing practice. It is a huge financial and time commitment on a parents part. Level 4 will be there next year too and she will only get better. That many hours is a lot for a 6 yr. old especially if she is alos starting kindergarten. L4 should be 4-6 hrs a week.

i was told and came to see many times that a child can be state champion at level 4 and then drop out by level 6..follow your gut and weigh your options..what's really important..some kids are driven and you don't have to do anything but chaperon..as a usag coach, i know that the trend is to slow the learning process down for the sake of the development of the child..some gyms don't even offer levels 1, 2, or 3 even though there are some key basic compulsory skills that someone jumping into level 4 won't get and at 6 don't have the maturity to understand..so when they see a kid who's talented they throw them into level 4..i made that mistake once and i said never again even if that kid looks like they can go straight to the moon..i want to get to know them and i want them to get to love the sport..my ultimate goal is for them to develop a lifestyle..if the go beyond me as an athlete then it becomes someone more qualified's job..a coach has to put what's in the best interest of the athlete..it's hard when a kid's talented..good luck
