What's the best way for someone with no coaching experience but some solid playing experience to begin coaching? Asst or start w young kids?

I used to play basketball at a division 1 level and now I am interested in coaching, but not sure where to start...should I look for openings as an assistant coach for a good team or on my own with younger, less competitive kids?

Looking for recommendations on the best way to get into coaching without getting over my head.

I would start by listening to this audio about how to improve your little league program. It is full of useful information that will help any coach in any sport. You can get the audio for free here http://lagoamedia.com/coachingyoungcouchpotatoes.com/landing/

Look for books on how to teach skills for your sport. Assisting can give valuable experience before you take on your own.

Write down why it is you want to coach, write down the important things you want to teach your kids, the important issues you feel helped you become the lover of your sport that you are and why you want to pass that love onto kids. Google the associations affiliated with your sport check out others also, Positive Coaching Alliance, So many have certifications that will help you think like a coach. Many books are available and will help you break down skills, learn the ins and outs of coaching that players easily overlook. If you are in it for the right reasons and you are able to inspire and motivate as well as teach and communicate, you're on your way already!

You are on the right site. Jump in and get your feet wet. Be sure to hone up on your communication skills.....for the kids and the parents. Make the practices short and sweet. Make the drills fun and somewhat competitive.

Command the kids through learning, don't demand. Ask the kids more than tell. Listen a lot....

Just a few tips to get you going.

What is your ultimate goal in all this? Do you want to be a head coach? I got involved in my school at the rec league level and then have moved in to the summer leagues for the same group of kids. As these kids developed, the coaching staff saw this and now I am being asked to help out at the high school level. I too want to be a coach, but I don't have a teaching degree. It would be nice to get in at a small college.

    Good Luck

just go for it I did and I have had soo much fun. I coached for the last 5 years baseball and soccer. when I wanted to start I watched other coaches and took some of what they did and added my own things it is also a great way to connect to your own children (if any) and make some new friends I love being a coach!!!!!!!

    Sean,
Read some coaching books, go to some coaching clinics, start out as an assistant, and remember that kids want just three things from sports: to get better, to have fun, and to feel that their coach really cares for them. Get started now and have a ball; the kids need you.

i think the best thing to do is try to remember how your coach taught you as a younger person. the best thing to remember is to make sure they learn but they also have fun doing it

Keep it fun but be sure they feel a sense of achievement, if only it includes breaking a sweat.
