Hi Stanley. Looks like Hampton Roads is in Chesapeake so here are a couple links that provide options for five-year-olds...

    http://www.chesapeake.va.us/services/depart/park-rec/leagueassoc.shtml

    http://www.ayso1475.org/AboutUsClub_css.aspx?o=246

I'll be doing the same thing next year with my five-year old.

He can join a learn to skate program with your hockey assosciation. My son started when he was 4. There might also be a soccer program in your area that you could sign him up for. I am not sure but you might also be able to sign him up for Football (flag of course) thru a Pop Warner team.

Check with Rec Park programs look in to Soccer T-Ball and or Flag Football at that age it's all about FUN, my 9 yr. old girl play's softball , fast pitch and she's competitive , but at the end of the game she has no clue nor does she care about the score in the end she wants to go have pizza with her friends or go spend the night at a friends and the most important part a dollar for the snack bar. its all about fun
