Where exactly is the Valley and are you interested in just joining a couple month long recreational league fall ball, or are you interested in joining a competetive ASA traveling team?

Recreation Leagues are typically set up to where you play one to two games every weekend for 2 or so months, then you are finished when that season is over. The skill level of the players vary from pretty good to someone who has never played before and is just getting into it. Most leagues have rules that dictate how often someone pitches, to mandating that girls rotate between in and out field. There is typically a one time up front fee for that season to cover league cost (typically under $100).
ASA competetive ball teams are designed for the series player. They a year round team that can play anywhere from one tournament to 3 a month. Tournaments may start on a Friday night and last through Sunday. Generally all of the players on the team are at least pretty good and very committed. Coaches and players put alot of practice time in and girls earn their spot on the field. Since it is year round and your team will count on you for tournaments, it is normally very hard to play other sports or be deeply involved with other activities. In order to cover the cost of practice fields and tournament fees monthly dues are collected and at least here in AZ can range from $50 a month on up, depending on age level.
I am not sure on what the "A" list team at school means. If you think you are pretty good and want to commit and move your game up to the next level, I would say that ASA is the place to be. Just remember it will cost you more.
If you just love to play and are just killing time between seasons, but don't want to have a huge commitment Recreation league ball is probably a better fit.

In the Arizona area most teams post their try-outs on an ASA forum. I looked on the internet and the following may be a good site to get you started. I did not spend alot of time looking through it but right off it looked like there were teams hosting try-outs. The site is http://www.socal-asa.com/index.php?ct=players_board. scroll down and they are listed by area code.
Additionally there are different websites designed for teams to easily build team sites. You can usually check out all of the teams listed in your area and even if they are not currently listing try-outs, you may be able to E-mail the team website or get a coaches number and set something up. If not, they all typically either know or know of the other teams and can direct you. A popular team website is eteamz.com then put softball - fastpitch as your sport. Once it comes up you can select by state. http://www.eteamz.com/fastpitch/sites/finder/index.cfm?search=fastpitch. Once all the team listings come up you can look through them to find your age group and check out their site. Even if they do not have anything posted about tryouts contact them and see. Girls come and go from teams, expecially this time of year. They may not be looking today but there could be a surprise opening next week. Also, many teams post their practice location and schedule on their site. take some time to just swing by and sit back and watch to see if they are a team that is coached or at the skill level you are interested in. If they look like something you like, then after the practice introduce yourself to the coach. As I stated earlier, most coaches and teams know each other, so by talking to a team they may turn you on to other teams that are looking. Good luck and let me know how it goes
Remember: If you find a interested team- ask about practice schedules, The number of people on the team (if they carry more than 12 you may not get much playing time), team start up fees and dues, any required fund raisers or sponsors, and how much planned travel is involved (many teams play mostly local but some go to other states. Our team traveled alot this year and it can be a financial burden.

Did you ask them about contact info for other local teams. I know just in our area of Tucson there are anywhere from 10 to 15 teams in most age groups. California is huge in softball, there are probably at least that many if not more in your general area.
