    Up downs work very well.

I agree up downs are effective, but if you are in a game they can also make the kids tired. My coach used to disipline after the game, literally. Up downs after the game while the whole team counted. Setting a no tolerance example quickly is best. Don't give them that inch, or they will take a mile. Robert Webster www.TampaSportsPhotos.com.

There isn't a lot that can be done during a game. The tone needs to be set at every practice and throughout the season that goofing off will not be tolerated. I make my kids to mountain climbers, rope pulls, push ups, sprints, etc... I kick their tails if they don't stay focused. BUT, as the coach I am part of the team! If the team gets 20 push ups for goofing off, that includes the coach. You got to coach em tough and love em tough.

Cleaning equipment, picking up garbage, on the field! If you run them you'll be doing it again and again...

If it is during a game, make them take off their helments and give them to you... then place them five yards apart on the sideline, and tell them if they move, they will not get their helments back until the game is over... meaning no play! If we are talking about goofing off during practice, I like to stop the practice, address the entire team telling them there are players who want to waste everyone elses time, and I point to each player and tell him to go stand in far corners of the endzone... and when they feel they can come to the team and explain why their goofing off was inappropriate, they can rejoin the rest of the practice... otherwise, they can just watch from a distance. If they wander off or don't comply, I pick up my cell phone, dial the parent, and tell them to come pick up their son for the day... then let the kid try to explain it to the parents in my presence. This never fails. SEPERATE the goof offs from each other AND from the team... they feel pretty useless then.

You have to take care of this in practice not during the game. You have to have strict practices with the kids not having much free time to goof off. Also parents need to get involved in this.
