Coach Kelly- Nice to meet you Coach Pickles, Chief Executive Bean Jelly Bean Sports. We work with tots everyday and I'm the first to admit that effective tot-sports coaching is a bit of an anomaly. There are many instructional techniques but unfortunately most are teaching more adult-versions of the game.

Check out http://hubpages.com/hub/Tot-Secrets-to-Hitting. This is one of several t-ball tot-instructional approaches that can help coaches like you build a better synergy with the children.

If you are looking for more specific drills let me know. I'm happy to help. Welcome to tot-coaching, the most challenging but rewarding experience you'll ever have. C.Pickles

One good drill i like is the high-low tee drill. Put two tees lined up about six inches apart. next raise the back tee higher than the front tee. Put a ball on the front tee and tell the kids to hit it without touching the back tee. This helps the kids practice a downhill swing at a young age

A drill I like to do with my team is an infield drill . I split the team into two groups on each side of second base . I put a box on 1st and a box on 3rd. My assistant coach and I will hit grounders to each group . They will field the ball and then make the toss to the box . If they are on the 3rd base side they throw to third . If they hit the box they get one point if they get it in the box they get 5 points . We do this a few teams and the winning team bats first . You can either use boxes or I also use laundry baskets or recycling bins. This gets the kids throwing to an object and making good throws. Then in game times they can make good throws to the bases . The kids love this .
Also an end of practice drill I like to use is is called the baseball relay . You split the teams into two . You put each team on a side of home plate . The first person in line has a ball . The team on the third base side of home will run the bases the wrong way , the other team will run the correct way . When the player rounds the bases and reaches home they will pass the ball to the next player in line and so on . Make sure kids are touching each base and if you have a lot of 1st year players have them call out the bases loud as they touch each one . It's a fun way for the kids to unwind at the end of practice .
