Hi Arnold,
Correct dribbling can be best learned starting by dribbling backwards. The dribbler will focus better on what the act of dribbling, be less distracted and get a good feel for proper body positioning. Mostly it will get feet out of the way so dribbling rates of success can be higher.
Dribble Backwards
Find balance bending at the waist and knees. Practice repeating the phrase, "Little dribbles, quick feet." Little dribbles moves the upper body over the ball, away from the body. Quick feet stop a dribbler from kicking the ball. Practice until dribbling can be done consistently for 10 seconds straight.Dribble Forwards
Think about how the backward dribbler had to stand and move. This is the same position the dribbler should be in when dribbling forward. Begin by dribbling in this position without moving first. To dribble forward, bend at the waist and knees. Bending at the waist and knees, like the backwards dribble, keep feet out of the way. Start by moving slowly with the basketball. Start slow, one dribble, take three steps and dribble again. Keep repeating this. It is necessary to learn how to move in the proper compact dribbling position before dribbling can be done right. Dribble more frequently as comfort level moving in the dribbling position increases.
Finally coaching thought. When dribbling forward, move the basketball forward first and then follow it with the body.
