Question
I am coaching in a league that has 6-9 year olds all playing together and they treat them all the same. Currently they have a machine set 36 feet away throwing a ball at 28 MPH. While this may not sound that fast too you, the first year, younger players are totally over matched. I think this is the wrong thing to do to young children. If I am right, what is the right thing to do?

46 feet is the correct distance from home plate to the pitching rubber. In our coach pitch league we can pitch to them from about 40 ft. We use small Jugs machine in practice that uses balls about 1.5 inches across. This gets them to focus on the ball better and the speed is somewhat adjustable. Not sure what the speed is but pretty sure it's slower than 28mph. We also just pitch ALOT of balls to them to see what they can hit. Repetition and proper form to achieve the muscle memory for a good swing is very important.

The tournaments we went to last year for 8 and under was the same as above, around 38-40' speed was set at 38 mph. All tournaments we went to last year were pitched by a jugs, single wheel, baseball pitching machine.I'll check with the other coaches and if for some reason I am off on the mph, I will re-respond.

We set ours at 36 - 38 MPH, single wheel jug at the standard Little League distance (set the machine on the mound or where it would be on our skinned field). This speed allows them to hit and concentrate. Problem becomes when they move up to kid pitch and they are not seening strikes, but they get over it and do well.

THE SPEED FOR AFTER TEE BALL
the speed for a pitching machine should be about 40feetaway and speed about 20-25mph.keep it at that speed to keep and eye on the ball and practic conection . -
keep it 20-25 mph, and every week add a mph until it gets too fast.
