The 12U Germantown Giants from Tennessee added their name to the prestigious list of champions who will compete for the National Youth Baseball Championships in Memphis, August 21st thru 24th.
"With the game tied at 1-1 in the first, Michael Fitzsimmons cracked a bases loaded double to dead center, SCORING 3 RUNS, and the Giants never looked back. The Giants ignited with six consecutive doubles to blow past the SC Spartans Gold (Liguna Niguel, CA) to capture a 13-1 run-rule victory in the 12U Super Series National Division title game. Spartans' manager Jared Sandler admitted his team "simply ran out of pitching," while battling their way from the losers' bracket to the title game.
Ironically, the Giants had lost to the Spartans 8-7 in pool play. While the Giants banged out 13 hits, pitcher Jonathan Phipps held the Spartans to just 1 hit in the shortened run-rule victory.
Catcher Shane Tucker was named tournament MVP. In the all-star game that followed the championship, Tucker uncorked a 300+ home run that soared waaaay over the 268 foot centerfield fence. Giants manager Mike Fitzsimmons said after the game, "This was one of the best tournaments in the nation this year. There were some great teams here. We're honored to be representing Super Series Baseball, and we look forward to the tournament of champions next month."
