<st1:city><st1:place>Lincoln</st1:place></st1:city>--The first full day of action in the 2008 Cornhusker State Games featured competition in 44 sports. Six more sports begin Sunday and competition resumes in several of Saturday's events. Medal results for completed divisions are now available at CornhuskerStateGames.com.<o:p></o:p>

Highlights from Saturday's events include:<o:p></o:p>

--In swimming, 64 year-old Keefe Lodwig of <st1:city><st1:place>Elkhorn</st1:place></st1:city> broke the 50 meter fly world record for the 60-65 age group with a time of 29.52. Lodwig also won gold medals in the 50 meter free, 100 meter free and 50 meter backstroke.<o:p></o:p>

--Eleven year-old Tiani Reeves of Gothenburg took home gold medals in the 100M (13.40), 200M (27.66) and Long Jump (14' 1 1/2") of the Youth Track & Field Midget Girls division. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
--Pallav Kumar Deka,a native of <st1:country-region><st1:place>India</st1:place></st1:country-region>, breezed to a Badminton Gold Medal in the Open Men's singles. As a 16 year-old in the <st1:place><st1:placetype>province</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename>Assam</st1:placename></st1:place>, where badminton is as widely played as baseball in <st1:country-region><st1:place>America</st1:place></st1:country-region>, Deka won an age group singles national championship. Deka, who is a graduate student at <st1:stockticker>UNO</st1:stockticker>, also won a gold medal in open doubles with his partner, Peng Xiau, a Doctor at <st1:place><st1:placename>Creighton</st1:placename> <st1:placetype>University</st1:placetype></st1:place>. <st1:stockticker>CSG</st1:stockticker> Badminton is a melting pot of sorts, with players formerly from <st1:country-region><st1:place>China</st1:place></st1:country-region>, the <st1:country-region><st1:place>Netherlands</st1:place></st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region><st1:place>Thailand</st1:place></st1:country-region> and <st1:country-region><st1:place>India</st1:place></st1:country-region>.<o:p></o:p>

--Several former track and field stars from <st1:place><st1:placename>Snyder</st1:placename> <st1:placetype>High School</st1:placetype></st1:place> took part in a reunion at the <st1:stockticker>CSG</st1:stockticker> Masters Track & Field Meet Saturday night at the Nebraska Wesleyan Track. The meeting, involving Nebraska State High School Track & Field Championship medalists from as far back as 1959 and at least four of the former Snyder track coaches, was put together by Alex Myer, 66. Most of the former athletes and at least one coach are competing in the meet.<o:p></o:p>

--From SportFest and the Opening Ceremonies Friday night... Eric Piatkowski, former Husker Star and 14-year NBA veteran, lit the caldron to begin the Games... <st1:stockticker>CSG</st1:stockticker> Scholarship winners for 2008 include Andrea Bowen, <st1:city><st1:place>Omaha</st1:place></st1:city>; Jami Harper, <st1:city><st1:place>Grand Island</st1:place></st1:city>; Brian Logan, Lincoln; Brandon Schlautman, Lincoln; Jodi Schreurs, <st1:city><st1:place>Grand Island</st1:place></st1:city>. Each winner receives a $1,000 Scholarship sponsored by the <st1:city><st1:place>Gallup</st1:place></st1:city> Organization... Cassidy Whitney, 8, of <st1:city><st1:place>Lincoln</st1:place></st1:city> was chosen as the winner of the random <st1:stockticker>CSG</st1:stockticker> Grand Prize drawing and will receive free airfare for two to any Midwest Airlines destination. Cassidy is set to compete in the kids' triathlon next week at <st1:place><st1:placename>Holmes</st1:placename> <st1:placetype>Lake</st1:placetype></st1:place>... Four thousand athletes and guests partook in the SportFest dinner and games. Attendance for the Opening Ceremonies was estimated at 7,000.<o:p></o:p>

Entries are still being accepted for Footstock, the Games' <st1:street><st1:address>5-Kilometer Road</st1:address></st1:street> Race and festival, and beach wrestling, the sport chosen by athletes for Games Executive Director Dave Mlnarik.<o:p></o:p>
