The Shuster family holds an annual curling competition, where they award the winner with the "Shuster Rooster," a small brass rooster.

Shuster is the gregarious and self-assured skip of the United States men's curling team. As a member of Pete Fenson's rink, he won a bronze medal at the 2006 Olympics, the first curling medal for the U.S. Later left the team to finish college.

He manages the bar at the Duluth Curling Club when not competing. The club is where he met his fiancée, Sara.
