The Power of TEAM!

By Kim White in

“I want to be able to give back what was given to me so many times: encouragement, patience, and support.” Wrote our Coach of the Week, Floyd Barco from Raleigh, North Carolina. Barco grew up playing Pop Warner football for the then Seaside Apaches, high school football and track & field. He earned a full ride scholarship for track & field to San Diego State University, where he still holds some records for the 400m to this day! Barco was so thankful for all the success he has had in his athletic career and uses coaching as one way to give back to the community what he has learned.

Not only does our Coach of the Week give back to his community through coaching but he also is a deacon of the lords Church, The Church of Christ in his town. He helps college kids who are looking to find a better direction in their life.

Outside of work, Barco is happily married to Dotty who is always the team mom taking pictures and encouraging from the sidelines. They have four boys that range from the ages of 8 to 13 years old. All of his boys play sports, which is how Barco quickly became involved in coaching.

Barco has been coaching Garner Pop Warner football for seven years, and the Carolina Eagle track & field for four years. His current team the Trojan Mighty Mite Blue team has 85% to 90% first time players on this level as well as being new to football. They have had their first game and as Barco wrote “the first game was a tough one”. He went on to say that they did not play how they practiced but knew his team would not lose faith. Barco knew that all he could ask for was that each player on his team try their best. “ we may not win every game, but we will win in regards to getting better, stronger and more dependable on each other.” In the end the Trojans will be more like brothers then teammates.

The Trojans might have lost their first game but they are ready to work hard with the help of their coaches and families. Barco wrote “ Weplay has been a tremendous way for our team to stay together.” The Trojans use Weplay to post new pictures, get directions, and to ask any questions they might have.

Congratulations to Floyd Barco and good luck to the Trojans on your upcoming season!
