Team Parents Need to be Ready for Anything!

By Kim White

Setting a positive example for future team leaders is what Victoria Swift-Christy from Edgewood, Maryland, our Team Parent of the week is all about.

Swift-Christy is Team Mom of the Edgewood Joppatowne 7-9 Steelers Black and parent of Iysiah Maull-Christy, 9, who plays running back/linebacker for the Steelers! She has got her hands full but when she is not working hard as a mother and team parent she likes to help with other youth community events.

Swift-Christy’s favorite team mom experience:

Team Mom Swift-Christy loves being a part of the team, but the part she enjoys the most is when the team makes the championship game. Swift-Christy feels that a team comes together as a true family because everyone is there, sharing the same experience, and cheering for every amazing play!

Recommendations for fellow Team Moms:

1. Be ready for ANYTHING!

Team Mom Swift-Christy, makes sure that the team is over prepared every time they hit the field. The EJS Black will have extra first aid kits, and mouthpieces for any child that might have forgotten theirs.

Not only is Swift-Christy ready with extra equipment, but she always has a few words of wisdom for any situation, because she knows that the most important part of sports is when the is child learning and having fun!

2. Always make sure that the parents are informed.

Communication is key on any team, and it is usually the job of the Team Parent to keep the rest of the families up to date. Team Mom Swift-Christy uses every outlet to keep everyone in the loop. She sends out the team information through Weplay, Text, and phone calls.

3. Never take anything personal.

As a mother herself, Swift-Christy understands that parents will do anything to protect their children. At times some parents come off as aggressive or over dramatic, but most of the time they have their child’s best interest at heart.

4. Keep the experience positive.

One of the most important recommendations that Swift-Christy wanted to give to other team Parents is knowing that everything you do can go in two different directions. You can be a positive memory or a negative memory in that child’s life. Of course we always want it to be a positive memory! In the words of our Team Parent of the Week “ So if we have to do extra snacks or physical packets, then know your doing it for the young athletes and to make the season and the memories the most positive experience for them.”

Team Parent Swift Christy wants future coaches and team parents to look back and say “Well, this is how our past team mom did it!”

Congratulations again to this week’s Team Parent of the Week, Victoria Swift-Christy! With all the hard work and dedication you put into your team, future team parents will definitely be looking back saying WOW!

Good luck to the Edgewood Joppatowne 7-9 Steelers Black in your upcoming Jamboree as well as your fall season!
