Softball drill: It is a modification on a T-Drill using cones where you would setup four cones some distance apart. Usually it is a change of speed/change of direction drill that works the feet, but we add in some hand/eye and softball skills as well. Also instead of cones we use 2nd base-to pitchers mound-to 3rd base-to 1st base to form our T. From 2nd the player charges a grounder at the pitchers mound and throws it home, then lateral slides to 3rd where she has to catch a grounder, tag the base, and throw it home, then sprints across to 1st where she has to make a catch (ball is either hit from home or thrown from home to first) and tag a runner coming from home. The player then lateral slides back to the mound and backpedals to 2nd where she catches a pop-up and throws it home. You can use players or coaches to catch at home plate and run to 1st.

Mike Tokarz My favorite drill is called the "dirty ball". It needs to be donethe day after it rains so there are lots of puddles. What we do is our coach hits fly balls anywhere in the out field and we need to chase them down. It's fun when we dive and go in a puddle or pond and get wet when we catch the ball. It's also cool when we dive and still miss it.

Backwards baseball/softball. A fielder at each bag, throwing the ball in reverse order ( H-3-2-1-H). Start with one runner at a time so the kids get the gist of it. Runner starts at home, as soon as he hears the ball hit the glove of the 3rd baseman he takes off for 1st. If he makes it there before the ball he is safe, if not out. This is a force out only drill, no rundowns or tags, just keep ball moving. As soon as he hears the fielder at home catch the ball he takes off for second. This continues each time he reaches a base before the ball gets there and leaves when the fielder behind him catches the ball. Once the players understand the rules on when to leave and the fielders get faster, you can add more than one runner at a time. This drill helps fielders get comfortable with pressure situations working on catching and throwing, for base runners works on leaving the base quickly on contact, working on speed and agility. My kids love this drill and want to play it at every practice.

My favorite softball drill is batting practice. Then it is the fielding drill where the coach pretends he is throwing the ball one direction and then throws it in another direction to teach us fielding, expecting the hit and getting into a good stance to catch and throw to home. The other drill that has helped me on the pitching mound and in the outfield with this drill is my SKLZ agility ladder. I have learned to side step and the drop stance. These are my favorite softball drills.

Stretching is very important. Simply doing toe touches, reaching for the sky, and doing squats can loosen you up enough to prevent injury.

One of my favorite softball drills is having the player run towards a pop fly and once in the process of throwing the ball to a player, has to run and field a hard fast grounder and when they are throwing that back. a soft grounder is rolled to them, that they have to use their bare hand to field it and soft toss it a player that is less then 3 feet away.

Another one of my favorite softball drills is the star drill. All the girls are placed at the fence either lined up in left, right or center field. The coach hits the ball to one of these areas and you have to run up, field it, throw it home and then rotate to another position until you've completed a star. Once that star is complete, you rotate through the bases. It is fun and fast paced. You get a running workout along with fielding while learning to field better.

One of my favorite Softball fielding drills: This drill works on several aspects of the game, fielding, throwing, foot work and conditioning. Players line up in foul territory behind 3rd base. Line 5 balls (about 5 ft apart) on the foul line, a ball at each pos., SS, mound, 2nd and 1st. Have a catcher and 1st baseman. The coach says go and the fielder (as fast and as accurate as possible) throws the balls from 3rs and short to 1st base and from 2nd, mound and 1st to home. That fielder then goes to 1st to receive, the fielder at 1st goes to home and the fielder at home goes to the end of the line. Coaches point: to make it challenging use a stop watch and award the best time.
    Good luck and have FUN!

I love running in place. Who needs a treadmill? I am amazed that people spend money on it when they can run or walk in place.

A great drill we use for my son's t-ball team and my daughters softball team is called the alligator and scarecrow. The player starts in the ready position. A coach throws or hits a ground ball and the player uses an alligator mouth motion with the top hand coming down to push the ball into his/her glove. This teaches 2 things, first is to use 2 hands. second it also keeps the top hand up so if the grounder takes a hop you can stop it with your top hand. Once the player has recieved the ground ball, they hop up and into the scarecrow position (throw position) This method keeps the players interested, especially the younger ones, because they associate the movements to something real.

Baseball or Softball: Swing Through Drill
Some players have a tendency to stop their swing on contact with the baseball or softball. This drill helps to overcome this fault in their swing.
Take a couple of volleyballs or soccer balls and let about 40% of the air out of the ball. Soft toss the deflated balls to a hitter from the side. Remind them on contact to complete their swing. By following through on their swing they will drive the deflated ball farther and receive positive feedback on their improved technique.

Put the glove on the ground when fielding

  • March 21, 2011

Every Tuesday my sister and I go to softball lessons, with a lady named Whitney who is a former Razorback softball player and she helps us to improve on our fielding. My favorite drill is practicing recieving ground balls, we take turns, rotating back and forth and we have to practice getting the right approach, which she has us do this thing where we take a step forward with our right foot a step with our left and a small hop forward, by the time we have done this the ball should be on the ground and we should be running forward to recieve the ball. I like this drill because I had never before heard of the step.step.hop and it really helps me and she explained to me using Newton's Laws Of Motion: An object at rest will remain at rest until a force is acted on it,an object in motion will stay in motion,so basically if your already moving by taking two steps and a hop you are in motion and will be able to get to the ball fast but if your just standing there in ready position it will

take longer for you to get your body moving. And also it helps me because I get bored and nervous when I am just standing in the field waiting so moving helps me to be less nervous.

I like playing catch with all kinds of throws like pop ups and grounders becuase it gives me a chance to improve for game day. If you get used to these kind of throws it will benifit you for fielding. The better you get the better chance of getting in the pros. This drill can also help with your running. If you teamate throws a ball far to the side and it is catchable you can run after it and and it is like playing the outfield. If you work with grounders it helps you improve with the infield play. Also playing catch benifits your throwing power/aim. It helps aim becuase your teamate gives you a target to throw at (the glove). It helps with power because if you are warmed up the further you can throw. Therefore improving your throwing power. That is why playing ctach is my favorite drill in baseball.

I like it when my dad brings the Sklz HitAWay PTS to our Cal Ripken league games - and sets it up before the game. A lot of my team mates want to get more practice and this helps them get in some swings before the games while other players are taking batting practice.

My favorite softball drill is 4 corners:it's where you go in one of the corners and you throw the ball to the person in the next corner then run to that corner, and you keep rotating and throwing!!it's a real active drill for running, throwing and catching!!

  • March 27, 2011

My favorite softball drill is for hitters. It is called the iceskater. it helps u gain balance and helps u control ur swing. all you do is pick up ur frount foot then put it down then do the same with ur back foot. then u go back to ur front foot and when it hits the groung swing at the tee.

I also like playing scrimage because it is like playing the real game. It will give you preps for the big day.

  • March 29, 2011

My favorite drill is a conditioning drill. Its called 4 corners. We place 4 cones in a rectangle shape (one in each corner) counting counter clockwise from the back right corner (cone 1), front right corner (2), front left corner (3), and back left corner (4). Spacing of the cones is dependent on skill level and age of the kids, we use 25 feet back to front and 40 feet right to left for our 12u baseball team. Starting at cone 1: Sprint to cone 2 (staying low) touch the top of cone 2 and shuffle to cone 3 touch the top of cone 3 and backpeddle to cone 4 touch the top of cone 4 and shuffle to cone 1, sprint diagonally to cone 3, backpeddle to cone 4 and sprint out to cone 2.

You can time each rep and get an average time for each player, and then use that average time for a goal to beat or a who can beat their average by the most contest.

This is a great all around drill for baseball because it develops both short burst speed, endurance, and reinforces 100% effort to compete.
