On December 8th 2010, the Santa Monica Vikings Mitey-Mite youth football team took home the Under Armour Youth Football National Championship with a 24-0 win over the Hyattsville Hawks. This was the opportunity of a lifetime for the Vikings, and our CEO, Lane Soelberg, was fortunate enough to be there for it all!
Lane’s son, Logan, 9, is a member of the Vikings Mitey-Mites and was one of the star players who scored a touchdown during the final championship game! The whole Weplay Team was very excited to follow the Vikings journey to the top with daily updates from Lane straight from Orlando.
The Vikings were not the biggest or oldest team in the tournament, but you would never know it. They showed a tremendous amount of heart and dedication throughout their 2010 season, which ended with a 15-2 record. The Mitey-Mites went into the tournament with only two losses and an open mind.
It’s not typical at the Mitey-Mites level to have a championship tournament. There are no qualifying matches and it's usually a round robin tournament instead of a playoff. After two rounds however, there were two teams still undefeated and the Vikings were one of them. This amount of talent amazed the AYF organization enough to have the top two teams play for a national championship! The Vikings knew what had to be done and they showed the Hawks that they weren't going home without the title!
