They pressed their faces close to the glass, some of the nine- and 10-year-olds barely tall enough to see over the boards even in their skates, and they wiped away the fog caused by their breath to get a better look.
Earlier in the day, in New York, the mood was grim. Brief talks ended without hope for a deal that would get the National Hockey League season started on time, if at all. Within a few days — hours, even — an announcement to postpone or cancel regular season games was expected.
The result was on the ice.
