If You Want To Build Your Team Chemistry, Then Hit The Road!

By Brendan Dempsey

Youth Sports Writer Coach Dawn Writes:
Road trips. Ugh! Booking hotel rooms, scheduling tournaments, figuring out where to get some healthy and tasty food. Sometimes road trips can be a pain in the neck. But…they can also be amazing ways for your team to come together in amazing ways. So, during “I Love Coaching” month, find out why I love a good old fashioned road trip.

4 Ways Overnight Road Trips Will Make Your Team Closer:

  • Bonding. As dictionary.com says, bonding is “a close friendship that develops between adults, often as a result of intense experiences.” We get to supply the intense experiences (discussed below) and watch the friendships grow!
  • Silliness. Defined as “absurd, ridiculous, or irrational” and those of you who’ve taken a group of young ladies on a road trip understand that all of those words apply. The good part of this is that we all have quiet folks on our teams that the rest of the team hasn’t really gotten to know yet and this is when they can break out of their shells.

Consider working with the local Convention and Visitors Bureau for group rates at hotels, recommendations on restaurants to handle a crowd and things to do between games. We love working with groups at my CVB and teams are always welcome!! Some CVB's help work tournaments, set-up welcome booths, provide maps and guides and even take photos. Sporting groups are a major economic driver in our community!

Hitting the road adds a new level of comittment ot playing, you are out of your area, it your friends and you against the world. But also the bonding of like souls. Some of the best people you will ever meet. As far as reservations, directions to the venues (sometimes multiple fields in multiple locations), be proactive, usually the event director will have cut a deal with the local hotels, so go there first. Ask if anyone on your team has gone there before, and if so what did they do and how did it work out for them. YOu may have a resource you don't even know is there. Make sure you carry with you all the blankets, beach towels, ice boxes (2-3; one for food and snacks, one for water and one for ice) our people are going to be hungry, thirsty and will need ice for sore wrists, fingers, shoulders etc.) especially if this is a bracket tourny where you may play 12 games in a weekend. Football maybe only three to four, but be prepared. The Scouting MOTTO
