Now in its second year, the High School Football Rudy Awards has created a buzz amongst football coaches around the country as a prestigious award that honors youth athletes with inspirational stories. This year's fan favorite and winner of a $5,000 college scholarship, picked by the community through online voting went to Tyler Dutruch of Slidell, LA.
Dutruch, suffering from a life with severe diabetes and daily insulin shots has never let his condition get in the way of following his dreams. If anything, it has been the fuel to drive his mentality to work hard at everything he does.
He is a senior at Pope John Paul II High School, and is a member of the Varsity football team. Before each game, Dutruch tests his blood sugar levels and wears insulin injector on his waist. His heart and determination has been an inspiration to both his teammates and coaches. "It is not a crutch, it is something that is a challenge and something that he lives with, but he will never let it get in his way or be an excuse," wrote Dutruch's coach. He has been very thankful for all the support he has had from family, teammates and parents.
