“Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming,” the words of former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. That's our Coach of the Week, Stephen Buzzard's sports motta. A teacher and a coach from Sacramento, California, Buzzard strives to convey this mantra to all of his students and players.
A 15-year veteran teacher at Saint Michael’s Episcopal Day School, he began coaching the varsity basketball team three years ago. He has also been coaching for the ADV- NBA Jazz-NBA/WNBA basketball league for nine years. To top things off, he runs a summer basketball camp and a winter basketball league for 550 kids grades K-8th.
Before Buzzard was a teacher and a coach, his dream was to become a play-by-play announcer for the NFL or NBA. He spent nine years announcing for the Sacramento Kings. Later, he worked for the WNBA’s Sacramento Monarchs, and also spent 14 seasons as the play-by-play announcer for UC Davis football.
While he enjoys broadcasting, he found a true passion helping youth athletes achieve their goals, and he continues to execute that goal today. Not only does he coach and teach, he has his own DJ business called Buzzardball. He's the resident coach and teacher that always knows how to have a good time.
Buzzard might be a busy man but he always finds time for his family. He and his wife Kristen have three kids Toph, 15, Max, 13, and Rileigh, 9. His family is the support system through it all.
