If you’re a member of the CC Fireworks softball team in Carrollton GA., Katy McKenzie is huge part of your every day life. A proud team mom to the 14-member fastpitch squad, McKenzie is not only the team’s number one cheerleader, she’s their mentor.
An elementary teacher by day, our Team Mom of the Week gracefully transfers her educational techniques to the softball field. While the job may come naturally to her, she's also invested in supporting her own daughter, #77 Lucy Grace, have a great experience on the 11 and 12-year-old team.
“My joy for children and love for teaching carries over to the ball team,” shared McKenzie. “I enjoy working with the youth where I feel I can make a difference.”
And that she does alongside her fellow sports mom and Firecrackers head coach Desiree Duke. The female lead girls team participates in numerous tournaments, which keeps them busy throughout the season. For this very reason, McKenzie said Weplay has been an essential resource.
“I love that I'm able to share pictures and highlights with everyone who is part of our team even if they don't get to be at the games,” wrote McKenzie expressing how she stays connected to parents, coaches and team fans on the Firecrackers Weplay team page. “Being able to connect with other people in the softball community is a great way to share tips and advice too!
Considering McKenzie’s educational background and her belief in the positive effects of youth sports participation, volunteering as a team mom has been a win-win situation. Indeed for her, the rewards are abundant. She thrives in working in an environment where she feels she’s making a difference. And her pride in seeing the girls improve and progress is clear.
Katy McKenzie’s recommendations for fellow Team Moms:
I encourage parents to be involved - support the relationships that your child has with his/her teammates
Praise your child first even when that have an off game or make an error
Most importantly - have fun & enjoy the spirit of the game
