At the London Olympic games, the United States of America won gold in basketball, twice. Both the men and women's teams gave dominant performances, and once again cemented the notion that when it comes to hoops, there's no place better than the US of A.
On the men's side, the United States squared off agains Spain in the gold medal game. The final score was 107-100, which is actually quite closer than most had predicted. NBA stars Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Tyson Chandler, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony led team USA to the gold over a formidable opponent. Team Spain had NBA stars Pau and Marc Gasol, and they made it a great and close match. In the end, the powerhouse that is USA basketball prevailed, and the Americans proved once again that they are #1.
The final of the women's basketball competition was a very dominant performance. Not only did they win every single game at London convincingly, no team even came close to beating them. The score of gold medal game against France was 86-50, and that's pretty much how the entire tournament went for this stellar team. This is the fifth straight gold medal for USA women's basketball - that's 16 years at the top of international basketball. What's more, is that this team is showing no signs of slowing down. Candace Parker and Maya Moore have filled in for former stars like Sheryl Swoopes and Lisa Leslie and this team looks like it's only going to improve.
If the London Olympic games have told us anything, it's that when it comes to basketball, there's no place like home.
