Weplay’s first ever gymnastics Coach of the Week, Haylee Brown, loves celebrating her passion. Like many gymnasts, she started training at a young age and was competing at level 10 (the highest elite level – often college or Olympic bound athletes) by the age of 15.
Though Coach Brown did not become an Olympic gymnast, she certainly did not let her dream end post competition. She immediately jumped into coaching, where her skill-set and knowledge bloomed.
She began her coaching career at a private club gym called Cache Valley Gymnastics Academy. She then moved on to be the Director of the Developmental Gymnastics Team (Levels 5-10) at Utah State University. She also had the opportunity to assist with the elite college team at USU for five years.
Coach Brown was not only a coach but also a student at USU. After completing her Exercise and Sports Science degree at Utah State, she moved to San Diego where she became the head Compulsory Coach/Compulsory Coordinator for Seawind Gymnastics in Carlsbad, CA. While coaching in San Diego, she met her now husband of three years.
In her newlywed stage, tragedy struck Coach Brown. She suffered serious injuries to her shoulder and back and received three successive surgeries to correct the issues. From this point on, Coach Brown knew her athletic abilities were severely limited. However, the competitor in her could never fully let go of her fervor with gymnastics.
After recovering from her two shoulder and back surgeries, Coach Brown and her husband moved to Houston, TX, where they have resided for the past year. Coach Brown is now growing stronger each day and she’s found her way back into the gym.
She wrote that she feels so fortunate to have been offered the Team Manager role at Discover Gymnastics, in Houston. She enjoys interacting with the team and is happy to be offering a hands on role with the many talented gymnasts.
Specifically she handles the gym’s meet entries, parent activities program and competitive wear. She’s also taken her role to the web, managing the team’s online presence here on Weplay. She keeps everyone updated, and offers a level of energy and enthusiasm that is highly valued by the athletes and coaches.
Coach Brown’s Key’s To Success:
* Giving hope to anyone recovering from a physical or personal tragedy
*Inspiring athletes young and old to stay active, involved and positive about their passion
